Training Description and Overview:
These modules are designed to provide clinicians, providers, non-clinical staff and other tobacco advocates with information about tobacco use and cessation in Alaska.
Module 1: Tobacco Facts
This module is an overview of the health effects of tobacco use, including morbidity and mortality rates at the National and State level.

This module is an overview of tobacco use in Alaska, including State and Regional prevalence rates.

Module 3: Tobacco and Special Populations
This module focuses on tobacco use and effects in three special populations: pregnant women, youth (<18) and smokeless tobacco users.

Module 4: Secondhand Smoke Exposure/Benefits of Being Smoke Free
This module is an overview of the various types of smoke exposure, including direct, secondhand and thirdhand smoke. Topics include information on the health effects of secondhand smoke exposure, and the benefits of living and working in smokefree environments.

Module 5: Tobacco Treatment in a Clinical Setting
This module is an overview of behavioral and pharmacotherapy methods of addressing tobacco use and dependence at the clinical level. Topics include the stages of change, behavioral treatment for tobacco use, pharmacotherapy treatment for tobacco use and motivational interviewing.

Module 6: Tobacco Clinical Interventions: The Five A's
This module is an overview of the Clinical Practices Guidelines for addressing tobacco use and dependence, as established by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Topics include the 5 A’s, the Brief Tobacco Intervention and strategies for referring patients to cessation services.

Module 7: Billing for Tobacco Dependence Services
This module is a brief overview of the diagnosis coding necessary to track and bill for tobacco services. Topics include ICD-9 codes, Tribal codes found in RPMS and Medicaid.

This module is an overview of the statewide and local tobacco cessation resources available in Alaska. Topics include Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line, local cessation services and online resources.
